Deoghar district is spread over an area of approx. 2500 sq km. Administratively, the district is divided into 2 sub-divisions Deoghar and Madhupur, which consist of 8 blocks - Deoghar, Mohanpur, Sarwan, Devipur, Sarath, Palojori, Madhupur and Karon. Each of these blocks are townships. Plus there is a 9th town namely Jasidih, which is run by a Notified Area Committee.
The state government has given considerable focus to religious tourism and a large part of the economy of the district hovers around religious tourists. The district headquarters, viz. the town Deoghar is well known world over due to the babadham temple complex - also known as Baba Baidyanath Dham. Apart from the babadham temple complex, there are a host of other religious places and tourist spots, viz. Ajgaibinath, Baiju Temple, Basukinath, Deva Sangha Math, Dolmanch, Harila Jori, Hathi Pahar or Mahadevatari, Jain Temple, Kathikund, Kundeshwari, Lila Temple, Mansarovar, Nandan Pahar, Naulakha Temple, Pagla Baba Ashram, Rikhia Ashram, Ram Krishna Mission Vidyapeeth, Satsang Nagar & Ashram, Shitala Temple, Shivaganga, Tapovan, Tarapeeth, Trikuta Parvata. These places attract people from across the country - particularly from Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, and a large part of the local population depend on these tourists for their livelihood.
Besides religious tourism, there are other avenues for livelihood and business as well.
Deoghar is an important place in Jharkhand State from the view of milk production. The cows and bullocks of this district are of short height and thin built. But milk yield is satisfactory. To improve the breed, the state govt. has taken some steps. Steed Bull, Hariyana and Thar Pakar bulls are distributed. Seeing the benefits in milk production, the interest of locals in this sector has increased and more and more people have taken to rearing new breed of cattle. For the treatment and prevention of diseases of the cows, all required facilities such as veterinary doctors, hospitals and medical stores are available.
Agriculturally, the district is at a disadvantage. Most parts of Deoghar District is rocky, slopy and soil is of low standard. During summer the water column goes down. Ajay, Patro, Dadhwa, and Jayanti are the main rivers. Crop cultivation is dependent on rain and hence it gets affected due to lack of rainfall. Though some initiatives have been taken by the state government in providing Lift Irrigation, Minor Irrigation, Medium and Large Irrigation projects.
Mines and Minerals
The Madhupur sub-division is known for availability of Coal. Chitra colliery is situated in the Madhupur sub-division. High quality coal is found in this mine. Beside coal, feldspar, lead, asbestos, stone and sand are also found.
The most part of the population living in the rural area of this district are poor tribals. The main reasons of poverty and backwardness are illiteracy, new social changes and lack of awareness to improve own life style. Santhals and others tribal use Handloom and power loom clothes.
The work of Rural people are traditional like rural and Cottage Industry, Tassar, Blacksmithship, Carpentry, Weaving clothes on handloom, preparation of jute ropes, stone grinding, making bidi and pottery. Besides this some major industries are also established. Pharmaceutical Works, Dabur India Private Limited, Bihar Silicate works at Madhupur, La Opala Industries at Madhupur, Hyderabad Cements, RailwayWagon factory at Jasidih. Besides this an Industrial Area is established in Jasidih, which is supported by the District Industries Centre (DIC) - a part of the department of Industry, Govt. of Jharkhand.
The DIC's responsibility entails making available all required facilities to the entrepreneurs at one place so that Small and Minor Industrial units are developed. The educated but unemployed youths and artisans which are backward from technical and financial points of view are encouraged by the Industry center.
